northern speculative fiction

Writers Group meeting:

Thursdays 6:00 pm at Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge 530 E Benson Blvd, Anchorage.

We discuss the writing of speculative fiction, trade manuscripts for review, and support each other in our craft.

Next meeting: September 25. Topic of discussion: prologues.

Northern Speculative Fiction is dedicated to speculative fiction writers living in Alaska and Yukon. We strive to be inclusive of all types of science fiction and fantasy from hard science fiction to magical realism, any fiction which contains something the reader knows could not be true.  Both literary fiction and commercial genres are welcome and valued.

Science fiction writer Lizzie Newell spent years attending writers’ conferences and science fiction conventions. Everywhere she encountered writers from Alaska and Yukon who had written speculative fiction or wanted to write it, but faced great challenges. When living in Alaska or Yukon it’s expensive and difficult to attend conferences, meet with editors and agents, and even in establishing critique partnerships.

Some writers have overcome the difficulty through support of RWA (Romance Writers of America) or of the excellent literary communities in Alaska and Yukon, but not all of us write in the romance or literary fiction genres.

I’ve come to believe that SF writers in Alaska and Yukon should band together.  We need our own association of speculative fiction writers, one which is open to all forms of speculative fiction and recognizes no boundaries, national or literary.
